Rijeka Through History: From Tarsatica to European Capital of Culture
If I asked you how old Rijeka is, you would probably say a few centuries. The reality is different - the first traces of settlement at this location are over two thousand years old.
Tarsatica - the Roman beginning
The first real town in the Rijeka area was called Tarsatica. It was a Roman settlement from the 1st century, with a forum, thermal baths, and defensive walls. Parts of these walls can still be seen today near the Roman Arch in the Old Town - it is the only above-ground remnant of the ancient city.
Middle Ages - Frankopans and Habsburgs
In the 13th century, Trsat and its surroundings were ruled by the Frankopans, one of the most powerful Croatian noble families. Rijeka became an important port, and in 1465 it came under Habsburg rule, remaining under that state system until 1918.
Fiume - the Austrian free city
In the 19th century, Rijeka (officially Fiume) became one of the most important ports of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Railways were built, the torpedo factory, the Harter paper factory, and shipyards were established. This was the golden age of Rijeka's industry and architecture - most of the buildings you see on Korzo today date from this period.
20th century - a city that changed states
Few cities in Europe changed flags as many times in the 20th century as Rijeka. After World War I, Rijeka experienced a brief adventure with Gabriele D'Annunzio, then became Italian, then Yugoslav, and finally Croatian. Each of these phases left its mark - in language, architecture, cuisine, and surnames.
Rijeka 2020 - European Capital of Culture
In 2020, Rijeka became the European Capital of Culture. Although the pandemic shaped much of the program, the project left Rijeka with a new Museum of Modern Art in the Benčić complex and a clear cultural ambition for the future.
