Trsat Fortress - Guardian of Rijeka Through the Centuries
If you have time for only one climb in Rijeka, make it Trsat. Not just for the view - though the view is spectacular - but for the story that has been unfolding here for eight centuries.
The Frankopans and the beginning
Trsat Fortress began construction in the 13th century as a stronghold guarding the trade route inland. The main builders were the Frankopans, a family that controlled much of Kvarner at the time. The fortress is perfectly positioned strategically - on one side it defends the approach from the sea, on the other it controls the road toward Zagreb.
Decline and Austrian renovation
After the Frankopans lost power, the fortress decayed for centuries. It gained new life in the 19th century when it was purchased by Austrian General Laval Nugent, who partially restored it in a Romantic style and placed his family tomb there - a mausoleum that still stands on the fortress plateau.
What to see today
The fortress is now a public space with a museum, summer stage, and café. But the extra reason worth coming is the view - Rijeka lies at your feet, the Kvarner Bay opens toward Cres and Krk, and on a clear day you can even see Istria and Velebit.
